Chapter 20
Sun streamed in through the cracks of the blinds, and I slowly stretched and ambled out of my bunk. I slept like a rock and decided it was the best mattress ever. Jackson’s door was shut tight, so I used the bathroom and brushed my teeth and hair and threw on sweats from my closet to head outside. The clock said it was nearly eight, and a blissful few people were outside. Helen met me at the kitchen bus and said Gloria was giving out baskets of fresh sausage and biscuits to take on the road, so I grabbed one for us. The drivers were hooking the car back up to the gray bus, while the stage buses went on ahead of us.
“Okay,” Helen said as she hugged Hank goodbye, “see everyone in about four hours.” We walked back to the bus together, and Helen winked at me. “You may have a quiet morning by yourself, dear. I hear Jackson was up drinking until the wee hours and may sleep for the whole drive.”
While I settled into the booth and picked at a biscuit, I grimaced at the thought of a hung-over Jackson who was disappointed in me. The morning brought more clarity, and I decided not to worry about gossip and just be myself. I recalled being that person once, when I danced. I had possessed confidence in who I was and what I did. Was I really that lost now? An idea came to me, a way I could make amends with Jackson, and I set the iPad up for later use.
I took advantage of having the place to myself and put on my yoga video. Afterward, I hopped in the shower and dressed in my skinny jeans with flats and a thin sweater that tied around the waist. I checked our game and discovered alcohol helped his skills. He’d played a seventy-five-point word and was well ahead of me now. I spent at least ten minutes slaving over my next play, and then I opened my computer to find an email from Will.
Sis, I just got an email confirmation from Rupp Arena that says I have four floor seats and backstage passes waiting for me at will call! This is amazing and I owe you big. You are officially the coolest sister in the world. Can’t wait for you to meet Marybeth at the show. Love, Will
I thought of how well Jackson treated me and hoped my plan would make up for some of my stupidity. He rose and went into the bathroom around 10:15, spending a good half hour in there, showering, shaving, and trying to get past the hangover. He emerged in gym shorts and a white shirt and limped over to the couch on his crutches, groaning as he sat down. I started coffee, put two sausage biscuits in the microwave, and brought them over as a peace offering.
“Good morning,” I said softly. “How bad do you feel?”
He looked at me, bleary. “Like shit.
